AI Overviews

AI Overviews is Google’s feature that generates an AI-written summary above traditional organic results for eligible search queries, synthesizing information from multiple web sources and displaying a small set of citation links alongside it. It appears only for some queries, varies by user and region, and is distinct from Google’s separate AI Mode conversational search experience.

The feature draws on Google’s search index and ranking signals combined with a generative model to produce a synthesized answer, then surfaces a limited set of linked sources beneath or beside it. Whether it appears at all depends on query type, with informational and comparison queries triggering it more often than navigational or transactional ones.

AI Overviews sits within the broader shift toward answer-first search interfaces, alongside AI Mode and chat-based assistants, and is one of several surfaces where a page can be summarized or cited without a traditional click-through. It is a distinct product from third-party AI answer engines and chat assistants, with its own eligibility rules and citation behavior.
