Zero-click search
A zero-click search is a search interaction in which the user finds their answer directly on the results or answer surface and never clicks through to a website. Featured snippets, knowledge panels, and AI-generated answer boxes all produce zero-click outcomes, and their share of total searches has grown as answer engines take over more query types.
Zero-click searches predate generative AI, but AI answer engines have accelerated the trend by synthesizing full answers instead of surfacing a single snippet. For content owners, this means traffic that once flowed from ranking well can shrink even as the underlying content becomes more influential, because the answer engine is absorbing the information and presenting it directly to the user without a click.
This dynamic pushes measurement away from click-through and pageview metrics toward mention-based ones: whether a brand is named, described accurately, and recommended inside the answer itself, regardless of whether the user ever visits the site. Zero-click growth is the underlying reason answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization exist as distinct disciplines from conventional web analytics.
